An Assistant Superintendent of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Halisu Sahabi, has been shot dead in Anambra just days before his wedding.
Sahabi, attached to the EFCC Zonal Command, was tragically killed on Saturday during a raid on suspected internet fraudsters in Awka, Anambra state capital.
According to the report, he had led his team to the house of a cybercrime suspect, Chukwuka Nnamdi.
Nnamdi, who was claimed to be a medical doctor from Ifite area Awka, reportedly fired a licensed pump action gun, killing Sahabi and injuring another officer. The Police and EFCC operatives would later arrest him after initially hiding in his neighbor’s ceiling.
When interrogated, Nnamdi claimed he had mistook the EFCC Operatives for armed robbers. Sahabi has, however, been buried in Sokoto according to Islamic rite.
Meanwhile, sources claimed that the deceased EFCC operative died due to a delay in medical attention after being rushed to an undisclosed hospital.
According to SaharaReporters, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, who visited Awka, Anambra State arranged for the transportation of the EFCC operative to Sokoto State for burial according to Islamic rites.
“He was buried in Sokoto this afternoon according to Muslim rites. Salisu was billed to get married after the next fasting season but he died tragically in the line of duty after his team was dispatched to confront alleged internet fraudsters in Awka, without a bulletproof vest,” a family source explained to SaharaReporters.
On Saturday, a police source had earlier revealed, “The police and EFCC operatives arrested the gunman in the ceiling of his neighbor’s room.
“After shooting and killing the EFCC operative he threw out the gun, a short pump action gun owned and licensed by his father into the bush.
“He hid at first in his ceiling and then crawled to his neighbor’s ceiling from where the police arrested and detained him.”
“His father went to the police station to state and support his position that he killed in self-defense.
“All the EFCC operatives dispatched for the night operation had no bulletproof vest. They just wore their branded EFCC jackets.”
“His killer, Chukwuka Josiah ikechukwu Nnamdi from Ifite, Awka, is currently detained at the SCID and he is likely to face murder charges even though he claimed he shot and killed the EFCC operative in self-defense.”
