
Popular Nigerian rapper, Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Okoye, has just been released from the popular Kuje Prison in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Tuesday 21 January 2025.
The went viral on the Nigerian social media space when his lawyer Deji Adeyanju, broke the news on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Speed Darlington is out of Kuje Prison.”
The popular Nigerian rapper, Speed Darlington, also known as Akpi, was granted bail by an Abuja court. This development was after the Nigeria Police Force’s decision to arraign him in court after facing the public the Nigeria Police Force decided Darlington had written a petition to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, urging the enforcement of a court order concerning his prolonged detention.
Speed Darlington’s detention was linked to his accusations against Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy, alleging an improper relationship with famous American rapper and music mogul P. Diddy.

Speed Darlington is a popular Nigerian rapper, his full name is Darlington Okoye, he was initially arrested on October 4, 2024, in Lagos and to Abuja. According to the report, he was detained for several allegations including defamation and cyberstalking made by fellow musician Burna Boy.
Darlington problem started when he accused Burna Boy of association with American “Diddy” Combs.
Following his initial detention, Darlington was granted administrative bail. But, he was rearrested on November 27, 2024, in Owerri, Imo State, his time on the allegations of jumping bail. His legal counsel made it known to the general public that Darlington had informed the police of a medical emergency necessitating travel abroad, and his return was coordinated with law enforcement.
During his time in detention, Darlington filed a ₦300 million lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police, citing violations of his fundamental rights because of his prolonged detention without arraignment. The Federal High Court in Abuja scheduled the hearing for January 27, 2025.
On January 15, 2025, Darlington was arraigned and granted bail. But, his release was delayed due to pending verification of the provided surety. His lawyer expressed optimism about his imminent release, stating efforts were underway to fulfill the bail conditions.
On Tuesday January 21, 2025, lawyer Deji Adeyanju confirmed Darlington’s release from Kuje, Prison, marking the end of his detention period.
